Hudson River Blog

Created by a sophomore seminar at Hamilton College, this blog considers the past, present, and future of the Hudson River, once described by Robert Boyle as "the most beautiful, messed up, productive, ignored, and surprising piece of water on the face of the earth."

Globalization and Post-Industrialism

Interesting piece related to our discussion of the post-industrial Hudson. I wonder what Al Gore would think.

I found this article particularly interesting after reading another article about McDonald’s in Beijing by Yunxiang Yan (in Golden Arches East). I think many people would be tempted to say (as I was) that China has its own culture and doesn’t need to follow our lead. I would never have assumed that the people of China actually really look at America as a role model (partially because I don’t see us as the greatest role model in the world). However, in Yan’s article, a Chinese woman is quoted as saying, “I want my daughter to learn more about American culture. She is taking an English typing class now, and I will buy her a computer next year” (Yan, 65). This really brings home the point that, as one of the most ‘modern’ and ‘developed’ countries in the world, our government must be aware of the way we act because other countries will imitate us. We must control our carbon emissions and be aware of our impact on the environment because the quality of the environment affects the entire world.
