Hudson River Blog

Created by a sophomore seminar at Hamilton College, this blog considers the past, present, and future of the Hudson River, once described by Robert Boyle as "the most beautiful, messed up, productive, ignored, and surprising piece of water on the face of the earth."

Follow the Art

http://www.thomascole.org/trail/about.html

The Hudson River school art trail, is something that was talked about today while visiting the Munson William Proctor Institute. This shows the map is used to observe the real scenery verses the painting by Thomas Cole. I thought that this was an interesting website with a lot of useful information about not only the Hudson River school art trail, but also about Thomas Cole.

I thought The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute was very interesting and entertaining. I found the series of paintings by Thomas Cole, The Voyage of Life, beautiful and intriguing. It is no easy task to define life in four paintings, but I believe Cole did a good job and got his point across. I believe Cole's message was that life is a journey that has many ups and downs, but the one constant is that God will always be with you. By doing some research on the website provided by Mr. Shen, I learned that Cole was a spiritual man and believed in salvation. His faith is definitely evident in this series of paintings. In the first painting "Childhood", an angel is leading a baby out of a tunnel and into a glorious world. The second painting "Youth", shows a young boy traveling through this beautiful landscape reaching for a heavenly kingdom in the distance, with the angel still by his side. In the third painting "Manhood", the aspiring young boy is replaced by a desperate man, and the beautiful scenery and calm water is replaced by rapids, jagged rocks and dead trees. The one thing that remains constant is the angel watching over this man. "Old Age" is the fourth and final painting and it shows an old man who has passed through the rapids to be led up to heaven by several angels. The one constant through all of these paintings was the presence of angels watching over the man in the boat. I believe this was Cole's message. God will be with you through all of life's journeys and if you trust in Him you will persevere.
